What Are Vorauszahlungen?
Vorauszahlungen (literally "advance payments") are quarterly income tax prepayments that freelancers, self-employed individuals, and anyone with significant non-employment income must make to the Finanzamt throughout the tax year. They exist because, unlike employees, freelancers have no employer withholding tax (Lohnsteuerabzug) — no one automatically deducts your income tax from each invoice.
The system works as a pay-as-you-earn proxy: you estimate (or the Finanzamt estimates) your annual tax liability, and you pay a quarter of it four times per year. At year-end, when you file your Einkommensteuererklärung, the final tax is calculated and compared against what you prepaid. You receive a refund or pay the difference.
Vorauszahlungen cover income tax (Einkommensteuer) and, if applicable, solidarity surcharge (Solidaritätszuschlag) and church tax (Kirchensteuer). They do not cover GKV health insurance contributions, which are billed separately by your Krankenkasse.
The Four Due Dates
| Quarter | Payment Due Date | Covers |
|---|---|---|
| Q1 | 10 March 2026 | January – March |
| Q2 | 10 June 2026 | April – June |
| Q3 | 10 September 2026 | July – September |
| Q4 | 10 December 2026 | October – December |
Payments are due on the 10th of the month. If the 10th falls on a weekend or public holiday, the deadline shifts to the next business day. Late payments trigger a Säumniszuschlag (late payment surcharge) of 1% per month on the outstanding amount.
How the Finanzamt Calculates Your Amount
Established Freelancers (Prior Year Tax on File)
The calculation is straightforward:
Annual Vorauszahlung = Prior Year's Assessed Income Tax ÷ 4 per quarter
Example: You filed your 2025 tax return and owed €16,800 in income tax after all deductions. Your 2026 quarterly Vorauszahlung = €16,800 ÷ 4 = €4,200 per quarter.
The Finanzamt sends a Vorauszahlungsbescheid (advance payment notice) — a formal administrative decision stating your quarterly amounts. This notice has legal force; you must pay or formally object.
First-Year Freelancers
In your first year, there is no prior tax history. Two things can happen:
- You estimate your income in the Fragebogen zur steuerlichen Erfassung (questionnaire submitted when registering as self-employed). The Finanzamt uses this to set preliminary Vorauszahlungen.
- The Finanzamt skips Vorauszahlungen for the first year if your projected tax is below €400/year — and you pay everything in one lump sum after filing your first return.
If you intentionally underestimate income in your registration to avoid Vorauszahlungen, you risk a substantial catch-up payment plus interest after your first tax return.
Adjusting Your Vorauszahlungen: The Anpassungsantrag
If your income changes materially during the year, you can file an Anpassungsantrag to revise your quarterly amounts. This is done via ELSTER (elster.de) or a written letter to your Finanzamt.
Upward adjustment: If your income is significantly higher than expected, proactively adjusting prevents a large year-end liability plus interest.
Downward adjustment: If income drops sharply (illness, client loss, career break), you can request reduced Vorauszahlungen to improve cash flow — though the Finanzamt will need plausible justification.
There is no fee for filing an Anpassungsantrag, and it can be filed multiple times per year. Your Steuerberater should routinely manage this as part of ongoing tax planning.
Late Payment Consequences: §233a AO
The interest regime on tax underpayments is regulated by §233a of the Abgabenordnung (AO):
- Interest rate: 1.8% per year (0.15% per month), set at this level since the 2022 reform
- Interest-free buffer: No interest is charged if the underpayment is less than €10,000 OR less than 10% of the final assessed tax
- Interest period starts: 15 months after the end of the tax year (so for 2026 tax, interest starts April 1, 2028)
- Maximum exposure: Interest continues to accrue until the final tax is paid
Practical example: You owed €18,000 in 2026 income tax but only prepaid €12,000 via Vorauszahlungen. Underpayment = €6,000. This is below the €10,000 threshold — no interest owed. But if you underpaid by €15,000, interest would apply to the full amount from April 2028.
Umsatzsteuer-Voranmeldung: The Separate VAT System
Vorauszahlungen and VAT returns are completely separate obligations:
| Feature | Einkommensteuer-Vorauszahlungen | Umsatzsteuer-Voranmeldung |
|---|---|---|
| What it covers | Income tax on profit | VAT collected minus VAT paid |
| Frequency | Quarterly (4x/year) | Monthly or quarterly |
| Filing method | Automatic (based on prior year) | Active filing via ELSTER |
| Due dates | 10 Mar, Jun, Sep, Dec | 10th of following month/quarter |
| Who is exempt | No one with >€400 tax liability | Kleinunternehmer (below €22k/€50k) |
Kleinunternehmerregelung: If your prior year revenue was below €22,000 and current year projected revenue is below €50,000 (2025/2026 thresholds after reform), you can apply the Kleinunternehmerregelung — you charge no VAT on invoices and file no Umsatzsteuer-Voranmeldungen. This simplifies administration but means you cannot reclaim VAT on business purchases.
How to Set Aside Money for Taxes
The standard rule of thumb for German freelancers: set aside 35-40% of every net invoice amount into a separate tax savings account. This covers:
- ~20-25% income tax (depending on income level)
- ~16.3% GKV health contribution (if GKV-insured, though this is billed separately)
- Smaller amounts for solidarity surcharge, church tax (if applicable)
A practical system: open a separate business savings account and transfer 35% of every invoice payment the day it arrives. Pay Vorauszahlungen directly from this account on the four due dates. After your annual tax return, any surplus in the account is genuine profit that can be distributed as a bonus or invested.
Paying via ELSTER
All Vorauszahlungen are paid via bank transfer to the Finanzamt. The payment details (IBAN, Verwendungszweck / payment reference) are on your Vorauszahlungsbescheid. You can also set up a SEPA direct debit authorisation via ELSTER (Einzugsermächtigung) to have the Finanzamt automatically debit your account on each due date — removing the risk of forgetting.
ELSTER (elster.de) is the official free online portal for all German tax filing. A Steuerberater can manage both Vorauszahlungen and VAT returns through ELSTER on your behalf.
Use the Salary Calculator at /salary-calculator to estimate your German income tax liability for 2026 — the figure you see is what the Finanzamt will base your Vorauszahlungen on, divided by four for each quarterly payment.
